Pilot program raises truck speed limit to 80 km/h on A10 Tauern motorway
Heavy trucks (over 7.5 tonnes) may now drive up to 80 km/h on the A10 Tauern motorway between Villach and Salzburg on Friday nights to early Saturday mornings as part of a pilot program running until 5 September 2026.
What changed
A temporary pilot program increases the maximum speed for heavy trucks (over 7.5 tonnes) from the standard 60 km/h to 80 km/h on the A10 Tauern motorway between the Villach junction (km 182.0) and Salzburg junction (km 0.0). This applies only to nighttime hours: Fridays 22:00 to Saturdays 05:00, starting the first Friday after publication and ending on Saturday, 5 September 2026.
Who is affected
Truck drivers operating heavy goods vehicles (over 7.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass) on the A10 Tauern motorway during the specified nighttime windows are directly affected. The higher speed limit does not apply during daytime hours or on other roads.
What to look out for
Existing truck driving bans (Fahrverbote) remain in effect and are not altered by this pilot program. Drivers must observe the 80 km/h limit only during the designated Friday-night to Saturday-morning periods; outside those times, standard speed limits apply. The program expires on 5 September 2026, after which normal speed limits return.
