Section control speed monitoring introduced on A 14 Rheintal motorway at Pfändertunnel
Austria has introduced average speed monitoring (section control) on two sections of the A 14 Rheintal motorway near the Pfändertunnel. Drivers will be monitored for average speed compliance on the inbound Innsbruck stretch (km 1.92–8.65) and outbound Munich stretch (km 8.66–1.90), effective immediately.
What changed
The federal government has established two sections of the A 14 Rheintal motorway where average speed is monitored automatically. Rather than measuring speed at a single point, section control calculates your average speed over the entire designated stretch. Signs will mark where monitoring begins and ends.
Who is affected
All drivers using the A 14 Rheintal motorway through the Pfändertunnel area are affected. The monitoring applies in both directions: towards Innsbruck (km 1.92 to 8.65) and towards Munich (km 8.66 to 1.90).
What to look out for
Watch for warning signs at the start and end of each monitored section. Your average speed across the entire section—not just at one moment—is what is measured. Exceeding the posted speed limit over the section distance may result in a fine. Plan your journey time accordingly, as maintaining a lower, steadier speed is now required to comply.
