Austria's electricity-labeling rules updated: new legal basis (ElWG) and 2027 deadlines
The Electricity Labeling Regulation 2022 (Stromkennzeichnungsverordnung 2022) has been amended by BGBl. II Nr. 302/2026, updating all references from the old ElWOG 2010 to the new Electricity Industry Act (ElWG, BGBl. I Nr. 91/2025) and adding new entry-into-force deadlines. Electricity suppliers in Austria are primarily affected.
What changed
A new amendment (BGBl. II Nr. 302/2026) has been incorporated. All legal-basis references throughout the regulation now point to the new Elektrizitätswirtschaftsgesetz (ElWG, BGBl. I Nr. 91/2025) instead of the former ElWOG 2010. A new paragraph § 13 Abs. 3 was added specifying staggered entry-into-force dates for several provisions.
Who is affected
Electricity traders and other suppliers (Stromhändler) who deliver electricity to end consumers in Austria and are required to label its origin and environmental impact are affected. The regulatory authority E-Control oversees compliance.
What to look out for
Certain provisions — including updated rules on primary labeling (§ 3), secondary labeling (§ 4), supplier/product mixes (§ 6), storage certificates (§ 10/10a) — enter into force on 1 January 2027. All other provisions of BGBl. II Nr. 302/2026 take effect the day after publication. Electricity labeling under the new rules must be applied for the first time in 2027, covering electricity delivered during calendar year 2026.
