Nice Agreement trademark classification: new contracting states and UK territorial extensions added to Austrian record
The Austrian federal law register entry for the Nice Agreement (Nizza-Abkommen, the international system classifying goods and services in trademark applications) has been updated to add nine new contracting states and record the UK's extension of the treaty to its crown dependencies and overseas territories. The update is primarily relevant to trademark and IP professionals.
What changed
Nine countries were added to the contracting parties list of the Nice Agreement: Israel, Paraguay, Saudi Arabia, Peru, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahamas, Chile, and Qatar. The United Kingdom extended the treaty's territorial scope to Gibraltar, Guernsey, Isle of Man, and Jersey. The last official update reference is now BGBl. III Nr. 112/2026.

Trademark lawyers, intellectual property professionals, and businesses that register trademarks internationally — particularly those operating in or filing trademarks for the newly acceding countries.
What to look out for
Peru entered a formal declaration stating that amendments to Articles 5–8 of the Nice Agreement take effect in Peru only after Peru notifies WIPO of their acceptance. Austria's record of this specific Geneva Act version is already marked as superseded as of 19 November 2020; Austria now operates under the most current consolidated version of the Nice Agreement.
