Insurance broker and agent licensing: 10-year time limit added for prior work experience
Austria has updated the insurance broker (Versicherungsmakler) and agent (Versicherungsagent) licensing rules to add a 10-year time limit for applicants claiming prior work experience. This change affects anyone applying for these licenses based on past employment in insurance or related roles and takes effect in mid-2026.
What changed
The regulation now requires that any prior work experience used to qualify for an insurance agent or broker license must have ended within the past 10 years, measured from the date the applicant submits a complete application to the authority. Previously, there was no such time limit—applicants could rely on work done decades ago.
Who is affected
Anyone applying for a license as an insurance agent (Versicherungsagent), insurance broker (Versicherungsmakler), or insurance advisor (Beratung in Versicherungsangelegenheiten) who does not have a formal qualification certificate must prove prior work experience. The new 10-year limit now applies to those seeking licenses in insurance brokerage and advisory roles.
What to look out for
If you plan to apply for an insurance broker or agent license, check when your previous work in insurance ended. Work experience more than 10 years old will no longer count toward your qualification. The regulation is set to be repealed and replaced on 22 July 2026 by Federal Law Gazette II No. 217/2026.
