New supplementary exam provisions added for engraver apprenticeship qualification
A new supplementary exam section has been added to the engraver apprenticeship qualification regulation. Individuals who have successfully completed apprenticeships in related trades (goldsmiths, jewelers, engravers of music, chasers, or photoengravers) may now take a supplementary exam in the engraver trade, with specific subject requirements depending on their original qualification. The regulation was last updated on 5 June 2026.
What changed
A new section titled "Supplementary Exam" (Zusatzprüfung) has been inserted into the regulation. It establishes that successful graduates from the apprenticeships in Gold- and Silversmiths, Jewelers, Music Engravers, Chasers, or Photoengravers can take a supplementary exam to qualify in the Engraver trade. The Photoengraver pathway requires a broader examination covering both "test work" and "technical discussion", while other pathways require only "test work".
Who is affected
This change affects individuals who have already successfully completed an apprenticeship in one of the listed related trades (Gold- and Silversmiths and Jewelers, Music Engravers, Chasers, or Photoengravers) and who wish to obtain the Engraver qualification. They now have a defined pathway to do so via the supplementary exam.
What to look out for
The supplementary exam requirements differ based on the original apprenticeship trade. Those coming from Photoengraver backgrounds face more extensive requirements (both "test work" and "technical discussion") compared to other trades (only "test work"). The regulation references other existing provisions (§ 2, subsections 4–6) for procedural details applicable to these supplementary exams.
