Purchasing-power allowance rates for Austrian civil servants abroad set for August 2026
Austria's Foreign Ministry has set percentage rates for calculating purchasing-power allowances (Kaufkraftausgleichszulagen) for Austrian federal civil servants and contract staff posted overseas. These rates, effective for August 2026, vary by diplomatic post to reflect local cost-of-living differences.
What changed
A new regulation establishes specific percentage rates for 130+ foreign duty stations. Each city receives a percentage (ranging from 1% to 46%) used to calculate the purchasing-power allowance added to salaries. For example, Geneva receives 46%, New York 26%, and Sydney 1%, while many locations (marked with –) receive 0%.
Who is affected
Austrian federal civil servants (Beamte) and contract staff (Vertragsbedienstete) posted to work at Austrian embassies, consulates, and international organizations abroad. Their monthly salaries will be adjusted using these rates to account for local purchasing power.
When it takes effect
The rates apply from August 2026 onwards, as specified in this official gazette publication (BGBl. II 245/2026).
