Repeat exam scope and supplementary exam eligibility revised for hotel & catering apprenticeship
Two substantive rules in the examination regulations for the Hotel- und Gastgewerbeassistent (hotel and catering assistant) apprenticeship have been updated: the scope of repeat exams when two practical subjects are failed has been narrowed, and detailed supplementary exam (Zusatzprüfung) pathways for graduates of related apprenticeships have been spelled out.
What changed
Under the revised §4(4)–(5), failing one practical subject still limits the repeat exam to that subject alone, but failing both practical subjects now triggers a repeat of the entire practical exam — previously both cases were bundled into one rule. A fully detailed §5 now specifies that Kellner or Koch graduates may sit a supplementary exam covering only 'Geschäftsfall Beherbergung', while Bürokaufmann graduates must also pass 'Fachkunde Gastronomie'. Minor typographic fixes (em-dash) and metadata updates were also made.
Who is affected
Apprentices in the Hotel- und Gastgewerbeassistent trade who fail practical exam subjects are directly affected by the changed repeat-exam rule. Holders of a completed Kellner, Koch, or Bürokaufmann apprenticeship who wish to add the hotel and catering assistant qualification are affected by the clarified supplementary exam requirements.
What to look out for
Candidates who fail both practical subjects must now prepare for the full practical repeat exam, not just the individual subjects. Applicants for the supplementary exam must check which subjects apply to their prior qualification before registering.
